From Muskets to Machine Guns: A Historic Depiction of American Wars in Popular Films

The course will chronologically survey wars/conflicts throughout the history of the United States and their corresponding depictions in popular films, beginning with the French and Indian War and continuing through the Gulf War.  Students will learn important historical background on each war/conflict and apply this knowledge to each film they view.  Using these popular films as a “springboard”, students will study the historical accuracies and inaccuracies of the war/conflicts’ depictions in each film, as well as compare and contrast the different views represented by each director.  By viewing popular films within a historical context, students will learn to answer important questions about each film and war/conflict such as: a) What about each film makes it historically accurate or inaccurate? b) Does the film justly depict both sides of the conflict? c) What general/specific message about war is portrayed in each film?  and d) How does this film portray both a historical accurate memory of the war (at the time of its creation) as well as a modern perspective?

Enrollment Info:

Enrollement will be on a first come first serve basis. Course control numbers will be given out on the first day of class.  The class will be from 7:30-9:30pm on Tuesday in 100 Wheeler.
