The Architecture of Berkeley

The main objectives of this course are for the students to gain a more thorough understanding of particular architectural styles in history and how they are applied in buildings seen on campus. Each week the class will cover a different genre of architecture, from the classical past through modernism and into influences of Asia. Discussion will be lead first by an overview of the individual styles and further in analyzing their incorporation into campus architecture. Students will be encouraged to interact individually with buildings on campus by presenting photographic and written exercises each week. Whenever possible, classes will be conducted in front of a structure as it correlates to the style discussed that week. Combining individual and collective interactions with the buildings on campus will initiate a well-rounded perspective of each style’s formal and social characteristics. Ultimately the purpose of this course aims to encourage a better understanding of the surrounding environment that is Berkeley’s Campus and to better appreciate and recognize the techniques and traditions influential to its architecture.
